Eavesdropping Techniques

The techniques and equipment utilized in electronic eavesdropping vary widely in sophistication and design. From the simplest “off the shelf” devices costing only a few dollars, to the most complex and expensive systems.

• Radio frequency (RF) transmitters. Most commonly referred to as a “bug” or free space  transmitter

• Wired microphones. One of the hardest “bugs” to catch

• Carrier current transmitters. RF energy over AC power lines, telephone lines or computer lines

• Video systems, RF or hardwire

• Light systems. Laser system pointed at your area to collect information. Include infrared systems.

• Tape recorders, telephone tapping systems

• Computer or data systems

• Mechanical transfer of audio info. Inadequate soundproofing of walls, audio paths through pipes, etc.
